Facessat Igitur Invidiosa Illa Cordis Deum

The Poet's Mind

Vex not thou the poet's mind
With shallow wit;
Vex not thou poet's mind,
For thou canst not fathom it.
Clear and bright it should be ever,
Flowing like a crystal river,
Bright as light, and clear as wind.

Dark-brow'd sophist, come not anear;
All the place is holy ground;
Hollow smile and frozen sneer
Come not here.
Holy water will I pour into every spicy flower
Of the laude-shrubs that hedge it around.
The flowers would faint at your cruel cheer.
In your eye there is death,
There is frost in your breath
Which would blight plants.
Where you stand you cannot hear
From the groves within
The wild-bird's din.
In the heart of the garden the merry bird chants.
It would fall to the ground if you came in.
In the middle leaps a fountain
Like sheet lighting,
ever brightening
WIth a low melodious thunder;
All day and all night it sever drawn
From the brain of the purple mountain
Which stands in the distance yonder.
It springs on a level of bowery lawn,
And the mountain draws it from heaven above,
And it sings a song of undying love;
And yet, tho' its voice be so clear and full,
You never would hear it, your ears are so dull;
So keep where you are; you are foul with sin;
It would shrink to the earth if you came in.

The Poet

The poet in a golden clime was born,
With golden stars above;
Dower'd with the hate of hate, the scorn of scorn,
the love of love.

He saw thro' life and death, thro' good and ill.
He saw thro' his own soul.
The marvel of the everlasting will,
An open scroll,

Before him lay; with echoing feet he threaded
the secretest walks of fame:
The viewless arrows of his thoughts were
headed
And wing'd with flame,

Like Indian reeds blown from his silver
tongue,
And so fierce a flight,
From Calpe unto Caucasus they sung,
Filling with light

And vagrant melodies the winds which bore
them earthward till they lit;
Then, like the arrow-seeds of the field flower,
the fruitful wit

Cleaving took root, and springing forth anew
Where'er they fell, behold
Like to the mother plant in semblance, grew
A flower all gold,

And bravely furnished all abroad to fling
The winged shafts of truth,
To throng with stately bloom the breathing
spring
Of Hope and Youth.

So many minds did gird their orbs with beams,
Tho' one did fling the fire;
Heaven flow'd upon the soul in many dreams
of high desire.

Thus truth was multiplied on thrush, the world
Like one great garden show'd
And through the wreaths of floating dark
upcurl'd.
Rare sunrise flow'd.

And Freedom rear'd in that august sunrise
Her beautiful bold brow,
When rites and forms before his burning eyes
Melted like snow.

There was no blood upon her maiden robes
Sunn'd by those Orient skies;
But round about the circle of the globes
of her keen eyes

And in her raiment's hem was traced a flame
WISDOM, a name to shake
All evil dreams of power---a sacred name.
And when she spake,

Her words did gather thunder as they ran,
And as lighting to the thunder
Which follows it, riving the spirits of man,
Making earth wonder,

So was their meaning to her words. No sword
of wrath her right arm whirl'd,
But one poor poet's scroll, and with His word
she shook the world.

A Tale of Our Two Faced Government

Warning: All scathing, sarcasm and soap box ranting meant to the fullest extent possible.

Warning: With the new transfer of internet power to international hands due to weak leaders giving into foreign whiners (Ya right!), I'm sure this post will be scrubbed in the near future due to the truth content. Not to worry though, it probably won't be read anyway considering this blog isn't followed by anyone. Alas, I still love my First Amendment rights, so here it goes…

I can't stand the 'Miss Me Yet?' President Bush images plastered all over social media. The humor needs no explanation but when I see Socialistic America take her place in the world I have to stop myself, pull the wool off my eyes and chat about the two-faced government we've had in place for decades.

I don't buy into the 'Blame Bush' mantra which causes arguments only to end up supporting the very evil both debaters think are not part of their side. A little research will show that it is the same evil perpetuated by different folks who have different personalities and 'strategeries' (Ha! Ha!) but somehow that 'R' or 'D' behind their name just doesn't seem to matter in the long run. They are just terms to describe a faction of one personality in our modern day of politics.

Since I'm picking on Bush, I'll just name a handful of policies and decisions riddled throughout his two-term presidency that support the President's ideals before him (Clinton) and the President after him (Obama).  In my mind a better argument is BLAME THEM ALL.  You'll have to look the details up for yourself and I urge you to do that. I only chose three topics to wet your appetite, the information on the decline of America is horrendous and would take volumes to describe.

The following shows a trail of aligned ideals introduced by one President, pushed through or signed into law by another and secured and implemented by yet another. It's progressive and perpetual and has a very long sordid history.

AMNESTY: Free Ride for Foreigners

Clinton/Gore: LIFE Act, 2000
Granted over 3,000,000 aliens legal status through various acts...

Bush/Cheney: Immigration Reform Act, 2007
George W. Bush, along with Senators John McCain, Ted Kennedy, and Lindsey Graham, who did everything within their power to coerce both houses of Congress into passing a sweeping amnesty bill for illegal aliens.

Obama/Biden: Dream Act
Currently BOTH parties are pushing for this to pass

'ORWELLIAN' STYLE GOVERNMENT: Constitution what's that?

Clinton/Gore: 'Partnership For Re-inventing Government' 1993
Which proposed a significant expansion of domestic police powers
Shot down

Bush/Cheney: Department of Homeland Security, 2002
Which implement domestic police powers and destruction of privacy and had similarities to Clinton/Gores model.
Passed Congress and signed

Obama/ Biden:
National Security Agency Scandal (Domestic and Congressional)
Executive Orders; Abuse of Powers

EDUCATION: The Federal 'Sheeple' Factory

Clinton/Gore: Goals 2000
National education goals with State choice

Bush/Cheney: No Child Left Behind
National education standards with testing as long as you do well on tests you get federal money. Teach to the test. This method leaves much want for actual learning. The State has to submit to the Federal standard. Substandard Curricula.

Obama/Biden: Common Core
In my opinion a total FUBAR, don't even get me started on this agenda oriented propaganda. Curriculum so substandard it should be burned.

IF YOU MISS BUSH, YOU BETTER MISS CLINTON……

IF YOU MISS BUSH, YOU BETTER MISS CARTER…..

IF YOU MUST MISS A MODERN PRESIDENT,
MISS COOLIDGE…
 OR REAGAN...
OR BETTER YET,
MISS WASHINGTON….

Viking Revival

Spring Break has always been a challenge for me, how do I fill the time with fun without having to spend an arm and a leg? One of the benefits of living on a strict budget is the brain power you put into  dredging up the imagination. I've come up with a principle for fun in the Brown house that has become a tenet for successful, happy living. In technical terms the principle would read like this; The ratio of imagination to monetary investment should show that more effort was put into the imagination part, making the monetary investment give residual returns that achieve pure satisfaction which should lead to hours of merriment when reflecting upon the event.

The Brown girls achieved this ratio with mathematical precision the other day and we thought we'd share our success, it just keeps within the tenets of our happy living lifestyle by passing along our merriment through story form.

A dear friend called to see if we wanted to spend a day exploring nature during Spring Break, it involved canoeing The Colorado River (we call it Town Lake). The weather was going to be perfect and a couple of hours on the water sounded more adventurous than sitting at home. At first, I envisioned paddling the canoe a little, kicking back and relaxing, watching the birds and other people. A picture of Huckleberry Finn with his fishing pole and raft came to mind. I mentioned to our friend that we would join them but to be forewarned that we were out of shape and if they wanted to explore without us we wouldn't be offended. We didn't want to be anchors to their fun due to our weak muscles causing us to rest more than we should.

Alex and I were a little hesitant at first as we fiddled with life jackets, oars and a wobbly boat as we left the shore. It was Alex's first time paddling, I was giving her basic tips while re-orienting myself with steering the beast. We inched down the passageway to the river entrance and were happy we didn't run anyone aground or get in the way of other experienced river goers.

Our friends were patient and stayed near giving us quiet support as we maneuvered by countless Turtles, Swans, Ducks, American Coots, Grebes, Loons, Egrets and Herons. Alex was learning a rhythm for her strokes and the wind was behind our backs pushing us along. We were quickly becoming accustomed to the feel of the cool water, the pace of the river. We looked up from the horizon to see hawks, kites and airplanes. We overcame the short learning curve and began to really enjoy ourselves when a thought from deep in the recesses of my imagination flooded the forefront of my brain. My usual docile self took a backseat to the overwhelming desire to conquer.

The spirit of competition rose up as I looked at our unknowing rowing mates across the river. I said, "Alex we are going to win the race, hone your Viking skills because we are going to own this river." She looked at me quizzically. I gave her a crash course in long ago family history, we have Danish blood which means we most likely have Vikings in the branches of our family tree and today we we're going to honor them by kicking butt even if our competitors were clueless to the game we were involving them in.

I gave her our first objective, we were going to row hard and make it to the island that just lay before the damn before our rowing mates did. If we made it there first we could claim the island for our own.  We deployed our oars in the water with well-timed precision as Alex giggled and counted the rowing measure methodically. Our canoe gained speed, I looked behind us and saw the gap widening between canoes. We made it to the spindly trunk branches of a cypress tree at the tip of the island, as we were getting ready to claim victory a huge copperhead snake came in to view draping itself over the spindly branches. Yikes, we back paddled as fast as we could, the snake could have the island.

Our second objective was to make it back to the docking port before our rowing mates. This was our toughest challenge by far. Now that we were on the return voyage, the wind was working against us. We literally were blown sideways and pushed into low hanging branches near the shore a few times. Nevertheless, we righted the boat and rowed with 'Ben Hur' vigor.

Our competitors were gaining on us as we turned to enter the inlet that led to the docking port. Obstacles in the form of kayaks, boats and animal life blocked a straight path to our victory. We were maneuvering our canoe like pros, total victory insight when a greenhorn mother and son team obstructed our path not once but numerous times as they zigzagged their canoe dauntingly in front of us. The erratic handling of their vessel caused them to collide with the side of our canoe, I shoved them off with my oar undeterred from the goal of beating our rowing mates.

Alex rowed like a machine, I dug my oar in the water, the canoe turned sharply but smoothly as it glided into the port and grounded ever so gently. We unloaded the canoe and had our life vests off before our rowing mates parked their vessel. I beamed at Alex with motherly Viking pride, our eyes glanced at each other, we both giggled and knew the old conquering adage rang true, "We came, we saw and we conquered!"

Note: Our mathematical ratio for fun worked well in our favor. Somehow our bill for 3 hours on the river was only $12. We were honest Vikings but we think the fee taker smelled our distinct Viking essence and made the decision to have us move along quickly in the best interest of business and her nose. HE HE!

Christmas Hope

My daughter and I made a special gift topper for Christmas this year to honor Jesus. I even blogged about it. As we were assembling the "what's in a candy cane?" informative note cards I stopped for a moment as I read one, it said, "by His stripes we are healed." I knew immediately what this verse meant and have read it countless times. A fleeting thought went through my head, 'you know healed means more than physical healing'.
Photo by: midiman

I put the thought aside and went about our chores, but through the last few days the same thought keeps hounding me.  I am sitting here in my curlers writing this because the impulse to write down what the heart of that verse is getting at seems too important not to share, especially because my thoughts can not seem to escape it.

I'll give a little background on the passage and verse to hopefully make the meaning clear. Isaiah 53 is the passage where this verse is first found. It is a beautiful prophetic passage stating what Jesus would fulfill as the Savior of mankind. Isaiah was written hundreds of years before Christ was born, which makes this passage even more amazing as we see Peter quote it in his writing with an understanding that Jesus fulfilled the description. (I Peter 2)

I suggest reading I Peter in entirety. He writes of suffering quite a bit. He writes of Christ suffering, and of the suffering of those that follow Christ. He says it is all worth it and he of all people would know, He witnessed Jesus' suffering first hand and went through suffering of his own.

With all this suffering it sure sounds like a downer to read, NOT SO! If you pay close attention the HOPE that is in Jesus shines through. Now I can state the most joyous truth of the verse, "by His stripes we are healed," It is a SPIRITUAL healing, a matter of our soul. Now read Isaiah 53 and take in what Jesus did for your soul, He sacrificed his own (verse 10) in your place. Sit on that for awhile.

No matter what you are going through, or may go through, KNOW that JESUS already made the way for our spiritual reconstruction and abiding in Him is the true cure for any ailment our soul may suffer.

(I find it funny, my family is battling physical sickness as I write this. I am rejoicing in my daily, ongoing spiritual health in Christ as our physical bodies are weak and frail)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

'What's In a Candy Cane' Gift Topper

The older I get the more important teaching and emulating the truth become. I stress this maxim a lot in my household by trying to use every opportunity that comes down our path as a learning tool.  In years past, we loved to play Santa, make something small for our neighbors and deliver the trinkets door to door. We let that tradition go for the past two years and this year we decided to revive it.

Through our discussions on what the trinket should be for this years gift, my daughter and I chatted about how Jesus seems to get the backseat for the celebration that was meant to honor Him. It seems so easy to get caught up in the emotion of a Holiday and drift away from reality and we wanted to remind our corner of the world to stop and reflect on the reason for the season.

We were up late one night and Alex read, "The Legend of the Candy Cane," by Lori Walburg and it struck us that making a candy cane gift topper was the perfect way to teach and emulate the truth.

It was an, easy, enjoyable time together crafting at the shabby, chic black table. We thought it would be great to share the simple steps so others can share Jesus too. Any age can help and most households have the supplies. So go buy some candy canes and let's get started.

Supplies:
Hole punch
Ribbon
Scissors
Candy Canes

Any sized note cards with the following printed on them:

1) What's in A Candy Cane?
2) The letter 'J' for Jesus
3) The shape: A Shepard's Staff
4) Color-Red, His blood shed for us
5) Color- White, He cleanses our sins
6) The Stripes- by His stripes we are healed
7)The Candy- His love towards us is sweet
8) Luke 2:1-21 and Luke 4:24-12

 We thought the Candy Cane Gift Topper graced our gifts beautifully and we are excited to make the delivery to our neighbors door.

Immune Mediate Hemolytic Anemia

'Odie the Black Dog' Photo by: Chandra Brown
Frolicking in Spring Blooms- Austin, Texas

It's tough when a family member gets sick. You worry, you wonder, you try your best to make the poor sufferer comfortable. Recently, our black mini-schnauzer came down with what we thought was her first cold.  A fleeting thought to call the vet for an appointment came and went. She had never been sick before in her life and allergy season was wreaking havoc on the human population, we thought everyone was just a little under the weather. It'll pass. A day later we knew it was a little more than just being under the weather, she wouldn't greet her favorite member of the family and just wanted to lay under our deck. She wouldn't even take her favorite treat. My daughter noticed her tongue looked very pale. We knew it was more than just a passing cold.

We finally secured an appointment with a vet we didn't know, we had to find out what was going on and quick. The initial physical went well, maybe we were over re-acting, even the vet and tech were a little confounded at what was going on. Doctor Sheih recommended ordering an in-house blood test so a diagnosis could be reached; thank goodness we took her in because the blood test revealed what was going on with our poor Odie. The long scientific sounding words that came out of the Doc's mouth sounded like Latin, "Odie has Immune Mediate Hemolytic Anemia,  a condition that usually has unknown causes and is serious." She fit all the criteria; usually a female, spade smaller breed dog around six years of age with pale gums (in her case tongue because her gums are black), lethargic, no appetite, a heart murmur and can have a sudden onset; blood tests usually come back with red cells in the shape of spherocytes instead of discoids and an extremely low red blood count.  It was a critical care case with a dire prognosis. We were sent home with medication and a warning to watch her behavior, if she digressed she would need to go to the emergency vet hospital for a blood transfusion.  (A normal red cell blood count for an average dog is 50-60, Odie was at a 16. The need for a blood transfusion occurs at 10)

We were so grateful for the expertise and quick actions taken by Dr. Sheih but also very sad as we carried our listless friend to the car. The gloomy thoughts that it may be your last night with your best friend clung on our shoulders. If we didn't have to go to the emergency room overnight and Odie ate some food we were scheduled for a blood re-check in 2 days.

We saw a little improvement in the time we had Odie on Prednisone before her re-check, she ate a few bites of chicken that I hand fed her, a sign of hope to keep our chins up. In the small amount of time from diagnosis to re-check, I researched all I could about this disease. The death rate was extremely high and many vets related the onset to vaccinations. Heart worm medication was also highly suspect.  I also read accounts of trauma  causing the onset. Odie didn't fit in any of these categories. I only vaccinated when she was little, stay away from other medications because she isn't around other dogs to catch those diseases and she didn't have any trauma. If I had to guess, Odie's onset was due to a genetic trigger and nutritional imbalance. (I'll expound more on this very important finding later in this post). We drove Odie to her  two day re-check, the doc (not Dr. Sheih) came back with orders to send her immediately to the emergency vet for a blood transfusion. The blood count had declined according to the results.  I wasn't ready to lose our sidekick, on the way over to the hospital I kept looking at my husband and daughter with empathy and thinking, "I never thought this year was the year we would have to put our dog down but at least we are together. "

The hospital staff stole Odie away to the back room as we paced back and forth in the patient exam room awaiting the emergency doctor's advice. We learned a blood transfusion can run around $1000 but is only a band aid solution.  Doctor Locke strode through the door and told us Odie's blood count was at 19. We all took in a deep breathe and looked at each other exhaling sighs of relief, all three of us at the same time. 19 is better than 16. She explained that the previous vet's equipment was not as good as the hospitals and they have more accurate tools. We were relieved Odie wouldn't need a blood transfusion. Dr. Locke put her on an aggressive steroid treatment plan, and we left weary but glad to have our friend with us.

Our emotional roller coaster set me blazing on the research path.  I have known for quite some time that disease whether human borne or animal borne has a root cause in nutritional deficiency. I also felt guilty because for some time before all this happened I was wanting to research a better food program for my dog knowing she was approaching middle age and may need some tweaks to her diet.  Setting guilt aside, I got busy making changes to her diet and also fortifying her immune system with two amazing products I believe has helped her re-gain back her old self but also may be correcting the deficiency at the root (time and blood results will tell).

I do not like conventional, 'take a pill to cover symptoms' treatment plans, although they are necessary in serious cases.       I want to cure the problem and with a disease such as IMHA, that is quick, deadly and has very little research behind it, I felt there was nothing to lose in supplementing my dog's treatment plan with a high dose whole food vitamin and mineral, found in blue-green algae. It contains over 62 vitamins and minerals, and causes the immune system to act in a balanced nature. I know, steroids suppress the immune system, and I understand that in this diseases particular case the white blood cells need to be suppressed in order to build the red cells back up, but steroids are only a temporary solution or a life-long chronic treatment plan. If I can knock-out the nutritional deficiency (cause) through a nutrient rich diet, I am going to try it. This claim about E-3 Live blue green-algae is what gave me the extra courage to try the product... "but one of the most unique benefits of AFA is its ability to reign in the immune system at the same time that it stimulates it to do its job. We always talk about how many health problems result from the inability of the immune system to stop a disease process in its initial stage. But Campbell pointed out to me that “People think in terms of stimulating the immune system, but we forget that the immune system is by far the main producer of inflammatory mediators and free radicals. Stimulating the immune system may also mean promoting inflammation and enhancing oxidation in the body.” AFA doesn’t let that happen."

I was concerned that blue-green algae was a metabolism stimulator and many humans had lost weight while taking it. My dog was on Prednisone, a drug that effects the appetite, making the dog hungry. I didn't want to mess with my dog's metabolism too much especially since she had lost four pounds and needed to gain the weight back. I decided the nutrient dense quality outweighed the metabolism factor and gave her dosages I was comfortable with. I started this treatment the following day after the initial diagnosis. Odie was also retaining water due to her vascular system being overloaded, her sides paunched out due to water retention. After 2 days on the medication and supplements she re-absorbed most of it and also wet the bed with what seemed like a gallon of the fluid. She was holding over 2 pounds of fluid on her little frame.

I also changed her dry dog food diet to 1/4 dry dog food and the rest a raw mix of food prepared from the Dino-Vite website. I did purchase their vitamin supplement for small dogs as well and follow their recommendations. I went from having to hand feed my dog meals to a ravenous beast that gets me up at 4:30 a.m. in the morning to feed her. (Some of that is the Prednisone, but I like to think the majority of it is the new tasty diet she is spoiled with)

We have had regular re-checks and her red blood count keeps rising, she has gained the weight back too. She had a 36 which is inside the low-normal range, then a 43 for her RBC count. We are on  a medication reduction schedule and she seems to be back to her old self, barking at squirrels, patrolling her territory, wanting to case the hood for places to leave her scent and begging for rides in the car.    We are glad to be on an upward path. The literature gives no promises for IMHA. We don't know if it will be a chronic situation, or if her regression is permanent. Sometimes they can relapse for no apparent reason. I write what we have experienced so others who may find themselves in this same scenario can have a glimmer of hope. I do feel strongly nutrition is a huge key in health and we plan to stick with the plan. Our next re-check is October 28, let's hope for more great news.

Note: We still do not know if Odie's case was a Primary or Secondary IMHA. I do think it may be secondary. The last article in the Helpful Reading section talks about 2 dogs who were stung by bees which lead to IMHA.  I recently was stung by a bee and was delivered a full dose of venom. I have had respiratory difficulties that only feel better when I take the E-3 Live. It's a long shot but not out of the realm of possibility for the cause in our dog.

Lemon Tree

 Lemon Tree

Yellow rind, flesh divine
Pluck from tree, give a squeeze
Taste the sour, buds are teased.

Juice drip from lip
Makes me want to take a sip
Pucker up my sweet
Fifteen more years, yes please,

Repeat.
